Kate has been tutoring since she was in high school. Since then, she has helped many students overcome obstacles in math and in other fields. Colleagues have called Kate "one of those teachers that weaves the art and science of teaching seamlessly," and have observed that "Kate designed learning opportunities in her classroom that encouraged students to actively invest themselves in the cognitive task." Her tutoring is based on fostering this kind of active engagement on the part of the student, to help him or her become a more capable and better equipped learner. Ultimately, success in math or any subject is based on a deep understanding of the fundamental concepts; Kate works on these concepts in creative and engaging ways, so that students are constantly building a stronger foundation.
Another colleague observed: "It was always refreshing to have Kate focus her limitless energy and new angles on age-old challenges. In brainstorming sessions, I came to expect the unexpected from Kate and to not be surprised when her approach worked. Importantly, working with Kate was also enjoyable. Kate’s energy and sense of humor set a tone of fun that kept all of us engaged and effective... Kate approaches each lesson, project or task with a fundamental respect for the individual children and perspectives involved, quietly drawing out any challenges and moving toward a solution."
